What Is the Intracept Procedure?
The Intracept procedure uses radiofrequency ablation to treat pain in the lower back. This treatment targets basivertebral nerves called medial branches, which carry information about pain from the vertebral body to the brain. By targeting these specific nerves, this outpatient procedure can help patients find relief without affecting other areas of the body or creating complications. Pain relief may take up to 3 months to be felt.
Steps of the Intracept Procedure
The Intracept Procedure consists of four main steps including:
#1: Access the Pedicle
Our providers use X-ray imaging to make sure they are targeting the right nerves. Once identified, a needle is inserted into the pedicle area of your spine. The pedicle is an anatomical structure of the vertebrae that connect each pair of ribs to the spine.
#2: Create the Channel
Once the needle is in place, our providers create a small channel in the bone. This channel is used to deliver the radiofrequency energy to the medial branch nerves.
#3: Place the RF Probe
Using the channel, providers place a probe in position to deliver radiofrequency energy. This energy heats up specific nerves to block pain signals.
#4: Ablate the Basivertebral Nerves
Once the probe is in place, our providers apply radiofrequency energy to ablate the basivertebral nerves. Basivertebral nerves are found on each vertebra and are located near medial branch nerve fibers.
